Ministers deny blocking probe against former government

ST GEORGE’S, Grenada, CMC – Two senior government ministers on Monday denied media reports that their colleagues were blocking an investigation into allegations of corruption against the former Keith Mitchell administration.

Foreign Affairs Minister Peter David and Finance Minister Nazim Burke went on a local radio talk show to issue the denial after weekend newspaper reports and editorials called on Prime Minister Tillman Thomas to dismiss the ministers accused of blocking the probe.

“I certainly know of no attempt to block or do any such thing. How can any minister do that? I find it utter nonsense,” said David.

He said the decision to prosecute or not to prosecute is one made by the Office of Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) – a constitutional office.

“The question of justice rests with the DPP and the Prime Minister as the Minister of National Security. Any questions with respect to prosecution should either be directed at the Director of Public Prosecution or the Prime Minister,” he added.

The government had earlier confirmed that an investigation was taking place into corruption allegations against members of the last administration but declined to provide details.

Burke told the listeners that he is unaware of anyone in the Cabinet who does not want prosecution.

“I don’t think there will be anybody in the Cabinet who can stop prosecution if there is going to be prosecution. I don’t have any reason to think that there is anybody in the cabinet who is opposed to prosecution.”

The Finance Minister said various investigations were ongoing and, in one instance, the probe is “well-advanced” and called on citizens to be patient.

“We are working with a forensic accountant who has gathered significant amount information for us. The police are involved, the DPP is involved, and the Financial Intelligence Unit is involved. Investigations are ongoing, I can assure. I’m asking you to take my word,” he added.
